To say that I am a devoted fan of the incredible trio that is More & Co. is a gross understatement. Not only have they enhanced my work, they have elevated my life. Thank you, thank you.

I know that I've been hiding from this space when my college roommate starts nagging me about it on Facebook.....

And so, reader, brace yourself. Or exit forthwith.

"chelliswilson." has been my personal exercise in go-for-broke risk-taking. No matter how large the financial investment, there is nothing more costly or more profound than the decision that one's own voice deserves to be added to the mix, that the moment to speak up has arrived, to look now-or-never in the face. I often describe "chelliswilson." as a "retail adventure". This stems, largely, from an inability to adequately describe the vision I have in my head. This space exists to promote beauty as an ideal, present work that I respect, and to be an active part of the ongoing "cultural conversation". We endeavor to surprise and delight, provide a coup de coeur moment with a perfect piece, and to provide a peaceful respite from the daily routine. Business is not my natural habitat. I'd rather watch paint dry than focus on price points and loss leaders. Marketing makes me squeamish. This does not describe my worldview. And that inherent in business is competition which, more often than not, brings out the worst in human creatures---a lack of loyalty, a dearth of generosity, and a tendency toward schadenfreude. Feeling as I do, I had decided to proceed quietly and diligently, enjoying the breathing room under the radar. And if some critical mass of souls embraced my lofty goals and uncompromising vision, so much the better. The positive responses I've received for the shop, this blog and its offerings, have gratified me more than I can express. Unfortunately, I suffer from a commonplace, yet crippling, psychosocial ailment that has nearly dismantled all I've worked for and created: I care far too much about the opinions and comments of others. A sinister combination of fear and fragility of ego insinuated its foot into my path and nearly sent me hurtling toward the pavement. "chelliswilson." has been dealt a blow. An all-encompassing and widely touted project, the largest personal and professional investment I've made since the inception of my business, has been cancelled. For a variety of personal/familial/financial reasons, the DEVERES/chelliswilson. partnership is no more. Because the work to come from this endeavor was to be the centerpiece of fall/winter/holiday here in the shop, the repercussions are many. The personal toll has been great. My health, already impacted by a particularly precarious year, presented me with some greater challenges. However, the greatest obstacle to moving positively forward has been the avoidance of work caused by a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach----what will people think? And so, this post is my way of facing the monster in the closet, and regaining my positive perspective. I have some delightful projects of the horizon which I'm excited to report. But I needed to put down this burden first. If this strikes you as "over-sharing", I can only ask for your pardon. If you are rubbing your hands together at my misfortune, well, shame on you. If you are moved to by me a drink, I salute you. Most importantly, I wrote this out of a need to operate in the open, and once having done that, fully re-engage in my most beloved enterprise.

I wrote the bulk of this yesterday, while ensconced at Arabica Coffee. Unfortunately, the afternoon's musical offering could only be described as "Hits of the Seventies", necessitating the use of headphones. As I wrote, I kept listening to the same handful of songs. Here, then, is my mini playlist of catharsis. Shall we call it "Tunes to Expose Oneself By"? Perhaps not. How about "Escaping from The Eagles"? I digress.... Maybe one of you can muster some strength, obtain some comfort from my little aural profile.

I'll start with the highbrow offering: Theodore Roethke set to music. An a cappella tour de force.

We are so pleased to have artist Katharine Whild's "Wardrobe in the Window" at "chelliswilson." for the month of November. A delightful and compelling meditation of the meaning and power of dress, Whild's work poses questions about our relationship with our wardrobes, and provides a provocative counterpoint to the wearables in the shop.

From the artist's statement:

Fashion is a huge industry and we are, after all, only the same animal underneath. Why all the fuss? Of course, people dress to satisfy the cultural requirements of their society. The repercussions of not doing so can be dire. But we take it farther. We play with beauty, with roles, with power....This complicated relationship with our bodies, magical thinking, and the cultural persona is a gold mine for the artist. Especially one who likes to play with unexpected materials and have a little fun with humanity in the process.

Sidebar: On a remotely related, but completely personal note, when I first saw Katharine's pieces, I exclaimed, "Unwearables!". This is a reference to the work of a performance artist character in this beloved 1995 film. An old favorite....

Please join us this First Friday beginning at 6:00 pm to celebrate the opening of studio: an installation---work by lisa dorr and max ascrizzi, on view at chelliswilson. for the month of October. The first incarnation of studio was presented at The Barn on Windy Way, adjacent to New Era Gallery on Vinalhaven Island in August. In conjunction with Lisa's residency at the Quimby Colony here in Portland this month, studio will be recreated in chelliswilson. Dorr's paintings, garments, and striped linen blankets, combined with Ascrizzi's furniture and objects, will become the dominant feature of the shop for the duration of the show.

--the literal translation of the ancient Sanskrit word "sutra".

chelliswilson. is absolutely delighted to present artist Erin Endicott's first exhibition in Maine.

Erin Endicott's Healing Sutras are a form of iconography, borne of a personal examination of the idea of inherited psychological wounds, and how those wounds insinuate themselves into our lives. The idea that the inherited wound---patterns of behavior and reactions---are seeded into our psyche at birth. And that, over time, this "seed" attracts harmful energy (like attracts like) and grows, creating an area of dense negativity and darkness in our physical bodies. For Endicott, the reparative act of "working through" involves making these wounds into visible, visceral objects. Endicott's personal history is incarnate in each of the Healing Sutras----the "canvas" for each piece being vintage fabrics passed down from the women in her family. The initial marks of the "wounds' are created by staining the fabric with walnut ink. This natural dye literally "grows" an organic shape in a distinctive earthy tone when applied to the damp fabric. Endicott sees this first step, with its variations in tone and shape, as creating a map of sorts for each piece. The painstakingly slow process of stitching each sutra has an almost ceremonial quality to it, and becomes a "rite of healing". These marks are copiously symbolic---vein/roots, cellular/seed shapes, the metaphor of the dress as skin---imbuing these beautiful objects with myriad layers of emotional and intellectual meaning.

The Healing Sutras have been exhibited at Anagnorisis Fine Arts in New York and at the Textile Art Center in Brooklyn, among other national and international venues. Healing Sutra #3 won the "Best in Show" award at Fiberart International 2010, a juried exhibition organized by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. Endicott is one of four featured artists in the Emerging Artists Showcase in the current (Summer 2011) issue of Fiberarts Magazine. Erin Endicott holds a BFA degree from Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia.

In addition to The Healing Sutras, two series of Endicott's works on paper----The Story Unfolds (graphite and antique paper) and Art of Dressmaking (ink on antique paper) will also be on view. Please join us for the opening reception during the First Friday Art Walk, August 5th, beginning at 6pm. The evening will also be our re-emergence from our "under construction" mode, giving you opportunity to meet my new partner, designer Georgia Deveres, and to see the changes we've made to the space. I can't think of a better way to spend a summer evening---Prosecco, treats, and the opportunity to be astonished by the truly extraordinary work of a most gifted artist. See you Friday!

Earlier this week, in response to a particularly overwrought email from me, a very wise (and beloved) person wrote:

Well, Macbeth may think it's sleep, but not I.

Hello, dear reader. Thought it was about time for something substantive to appear in this space. And while "chelliswilson." is not a personal blog per se, I am still the person behind it. And this person's "personal" has been a tad chaotic of late. Upheaval has reined supreme. At such times, when all one's miseries are clamoring for center stage, whatever is done for pleasure (gasp!) is rendered frivolous and shunted down the "to-do" list. (Exhibit: this blog) Fortunately, before I devolved into a completely morose character, I reminded myself why I read beautiful blogs and devour glossy periodicals---for the nourishment. And, suddenly, blogging didn't seem so trivial after all. If anything found here has bolstered up someone's dark day, reminded anyone why beauty was important, or given any beleaguered soul a sense of kinship, then that's more than enough reason to carry on.

And, so, I'd like to offer up a small sampling of the visual treats responsible for buoying up my little soul these days.

I'm not sure I'm fully able to articulate how lovely the "Behind the Bar" experience was for me, though perhaps not in the way one might expect. As I've expressed before, "chelliswilson.", my little "retail adventure", is a personal gesture towards expanding the conversation about what we buy and why, that makes the suggestion that issues of intention and production should factor into our sense of what is desirable. And, as you can imagine, such concepts don't always sit well with all and sundry. I'm OK with that because I love ideas, have big opinions, and am generally feisty. But when I donned my bartender/storyteller hat (thanks to Alissa and Ryan who invited me (and, of course, Grace), I realized the extent to which others embrace these ideas as well and the extent to which they, oh so generously, support me. I blushed at the lavish praise. I reveled in the connectedness, the sense of being part of a "tribe". Thank you for all the kind words. Thank you for the love.

Speaking of tribes....what are the human components of a truly great one? Today I'll offer up three: The Burgeoning Girl, The Provocateur, The Role Model. The first two are primary and essential to my life, the last is a supremely stylish, intelligent, and insightful woman I admire intensely from afar. Truly worth emulating....

This spot-on interview with Sally Singer has given me new permission to blog with abandon about whatever I desire. Yes, it's "retail", but it's also intensely personal. Singer reminds us that our lifestyle choices are "emotional and about what moves us." And that fashion is about "aesthetics and the zeitgeist". Commercial ventures will be expected to show their ethical and emotional sides as our purchases increasingly reflect our core beliefs. With perfect clarity, she makes her point by saying:

Everyone gets dressed every day and wants to look better. It's a common denominator. So the question is, what are you going to put on and what is it going to say about you in the world?....and what are you going to buy at the grocery store and feed your kids? Or how are you going to power your car? These are lifestyle choices that matter. They may not matter as much as other decisions you make, but these decisions are emotional and relevant. And they are, in the aggregate, political.

I like being a fan. Not much feels better than being able to genuinely, enthusiastically admire someone. These three are not only talented and insightful but also generous and encouraging in return. Two need no introduction to readers of this blog. The third, is the force behind our upcoming First Friday fete. (an introduction and an invitation!) So here's my news.....

Congratulations to our dear Maria! Her book, Sundays Are For Lovers, is now being carried by this perfect bookshop/gallery in Paris. Merveilleux!

It's no secret how much I love Imke Klee's stunning work. If you haven't thoroughly browsed her website, do so immediately. It's lyrical. Sight Unseen blog thinks so, too. 8 Things.

And I'm so very pleased to announce our August art offering, The Particulars of Persistent Reverie: an experiment in fashioning the lost and looming..." an installation and performance conceived and executed by artist Alethea Norene. She contacted me about doing project at "chelliswilson." because she loved the space and the concept. Once I discovered she'd recently been in residence at Mildred's Lane, the 92 acre compound that serves as " a collaboration between Mark Dion, J. Morgan Puett, and their associates", I was fascinated. Southerner by birth, vagabond by choice, Alethea Norene holds a BFA cum laude in photography from the Watkins College of Art & Design in Nashville, TN and an MFA from MECA. She has been an assistant to acclaimed artist J. Morgan Puett and collaborated with Puett and others on the 2010 exhibition Workstyles, presented at Alexander Gray Associates in New York. Whether utilizing photography, printed matter, or performance/collaboration, Alethea's work is at once challenging and seductive. The work she's presenting here on Friday evening she refers to as an "experimental hosting", "a late summer party for dreamers and the well-dressed". A "southern apparition" featuring dixie music, scandalous luxury, and beverages for both ladies and gentlemen. Deliciously difficult to describe, our evening is sure to be a sincere sensation. Think Bellinis. Mint Juleps. A live model in a bathtub. Victorian linens. Live jazz.

And that's just the opening salvo.... This is the EVER Manifesto. Go here to find their modus operandi, thoughtful interviews, and details of many thought-provoking projects. Of course, I love everything the EVER Manifesto represents about the possibilities of seeing fashion (and the commerce inherent therein...) from an entirely different angle. When we operate according to these principles, so much that's been lost is returned to us. Beauty. Craftsmanship. Trust. The inestimable value of honest exchange. A quote from Norwegian designer Siri Johansen distills these values perfectly:

When purchasing a garment, you are not only investing in a piece to treasure for years, you are investing in the integrity of the process it took to make that garment.

This is how I feel about every piece (garments as well as other treasures...) at "chelliswilson." And the spirit of the work comes from each designer's commitment to aesthetics and process. I've just updated the online shop with new treasures---clothing for women and girls, reading material, a gorgeous necklace, and two magical handmade dolls. It's my hope that all the lovely people who read this blog and have been so supportive from afar will feel that the shop is available to them.....like being around the (virtual) corner!

We sailed out of Camden Harbor with the crew of the Schooner Olad far out into breathtaking Penobscot Bay. We saw eagles, seals, and a porpoise! Yes, this is why people fall in love with Maine.

And after all that...we had an incredible birthday dinner here. Just about perfect...

I usually don't think of poetry and furniture in the same breath, but when searching for the right words to describe the lyrical quality of Jonas Eule's Weather Furniture Works, I kept coming back to Pablo Neruda and his Odes to Common Things. Jonas is a true artisan, marrying handcrafted workmanship to a mid-century aesthetic. Yet his work is never precious. Instead, each piece is imbued with a deep respect for the utilitarian, the physical act of making; they exude maturity, even gravitas, as if they had been in one's family for a generation. This is an apt description of the craftsman as well. At twenty-six, Jonas exudes an earnest passion for his craft and an impressive depth of knowledge. You owe it to yourself to come by and see his work. These are stories of wood and tools and history and wit.

Bijoux. That's the name I've given to our exhibition of new work featuring award-winning jeweler Tracy Johnson and fashion designer Lisa Dorr, beginning this First Friday evening from 5 until 8 pm. Because "bijoux" makes one think of jewels, secret treasures, surprises and delights. A more archaic meaning of bijou is "small and elegant". And that's a phrase that describes the enterprises of both these talented designer/makers so perfectly. Each in her own studio, solitary and focused, creating work that exudes thoughtfulness, personality, true worth. And beauty. Visual, textural, conceptual---the real thing. And, as a bonus, both lines just happen to be local, hailing from Harpswell and Vinalhaven Island, respectively.

So, if you're anywhere near our street this Friday evening, come celebrate with us and indulge your senses. We'll have your glass of Prosecco chilling and a treat or two. (I think I'm going to be whipping up meringues with a recipe from here, and another from my newest cookbook recommended by the wonderful duo at Rabelais.) Something Baroque. Because what else can you call an evening full of jewels and frocks? Because a little touch of the excessive is good for what ails us, right?

I must say that the lovely photo makes the shop look particularly inviting (thanks, Maria..). And it's doubly special for me to have us in the issue with "Bright Star" on the cover---a film that I adore!

3 degrees of separation...

Once upon a time, two women sat at a bar in Portland, Maine over a cocktail (the delicious but lethal Basil Lemonade at Local 188, to be exact) discussing art, men, and an unlikely, but mutual, interest: American designers who hail from Alabama. Her favorite: Billy Reid. Mine: Natalie Chanin. Throw in a little Gas Design, a little PieLab (and another cocktail), and you have an unforgettable bonding moment. Since that evening, Sara Lemieux has been one of my favorite people and a dear friend. Two years later, Miss Sara and Miss Kellen have gone on the road, and found their way to Alabama. And, in addition to making the pilgrimage to Butch Anthony's (Natalie Chanin's significant other) Museum of Wonder, they've blown kisses to Billy Reid in traffic, and secured a residency at Gas Design Creative Fuel Design Center! The beautiful creation in the photo above is just a portion of the loveliness to emerge from their time at Gas Design. For more, visit their blog documenting this trip and the art being created: Silt & Sediment. And please disregard the ridiculous "content warning". Yes, indeed, nude women are a feature of their work. (work created by women, for God's sake!) Gee, it's 2010. Why are we still such a nation of prudes?

Another lovely bit of synchronicity found courtesy of "Why Design Now?", the National Design Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt and Alabama Studio Journal. "Why Design Now?" showcases inspiring work from "designers around the world (who) are answering this question by creating products, buildings, landscapes, messages and more that address social and environmental challenges." Alabama Chanin pieces are sharing space with three other uplifting endeavors--- two sociopolitical, and one that's design in its purest form---a love letter to the idea of conscious creation.

First, "The Girl Effect". A call to action reminding us of the potential of all girls...everywhere. Second, Annie Leonard's "The Story of Stuff" which champions the idea that we should reject mindless consumerism and, instead, "have greater reverence and appreciation" for the goods that we purchase. Finally, and most perfectly, "Painted" the Dutch fashion design collaborative (I've raved about them previously...) that, with both their couture and small-run series, has raised clothing construction to an artform. Or, as they call it, "a story of garments".

Now doesn't that all dovetail nicely?

Ne plus ultra...

In keeping with the title....the above. Cy Twombly. For me, the apotheosis of the phrase "ne plus ultra".

There is little in life that surpasses the sensation of encountering something---a human, an object, an idea--that instantaneously bestows a certainty that you are in the presence of your ideal, your superlative, the Great Inner "Yes!". Not inclined to suffer fools and being particular to a fault, I live to be seduced by whatever is excellent. In such fortunate moments, I gush, I rhapsodize.

Here are some recently discovered examples.

beauty every day...

A lovely record of the power of aesthetics, Mady Dooijes' blog, Abundance, nearly bursts with astonishing visuals. Her eye never fails her and I never fail to be inspired by her discoveries. Via Abundance, I was led here. This video record of Yohji Yamamoto's Spring 1999 show left me speechless. It's perfection.

the beauty and the rite of passage...

Patrick Demarchelier's lyrical, sensual photographs in combination with Gisele Bundchen's refreshing attitude of common sense and positivity, achieved something rarely seen in mainstream, American media: a portrait of pregnancy and childbirth as an experience both transformative and absolutely normal. American Vogue was the last place I expected to find an unapologetic endorsement for home birth as a sane, intimate, safe choice, but find it I did. Well done. (This issue is particularly dear to my heart because, in a previous incarnation, I was a home birth midwife, and have experienced the power of home birth with my own children.) As you might have guessed, I love babies! And I was besotted with this.

the beauty of devotion...

With her most recent series of photographs, Proud Flesh, a powerful nude study of her husband, Larry Mann, with whom she has spent the last forty years, Sally Mann marks and instructs us once again with her formidable talent. As literate as she is visual, her essay about this work is a testament to the power of deep trust honed over time. I was especially moved by this paragraph:

And so it was with fire and ice, the studio woodstove too far away from the light to do him any good on a cold winter afternoon, that Larry and I began this work of exploring what it means to grow older, to let the sunshine fall voluptuously on a still-beautiful form, and to spend quiet afternoons together again. No phone, no kids, two fingers of bourbon, the smell of the ether, the two of us—still in love, still at work.

Something to be said for long term relationships? Yes, indeed.

I suppose if I'm terribly lucky, at least one intrepid individual is out there reading this. Because as you, oh lonely reader, know all too well, I have been neglecting this space for some time now. In favor of? Well... Attending to my life. Examining my life. Probably too much, but I'm a chronic ruminator and it's my way.... And so, emerging from a month of obsessing about moral courage in light of the tragedy in Haiti and the death of Howard Zinn, of not being able to figure out for the life of me how to work full-time, be a mother to a young girl, and have any shred of a personal life (simultaneously), and with the realization that I have more interests and longings than one life can possibly hold; I'll edge my way back into this space with a small list of discoveries and a smattering of thoughts. The pile on the table...so to speak (see above. I'm sure all my dearest intimates can find the secret message in the photo...).

Re Haiti: Incredibly grateful for this post by Natalie Chanin that spoke to my own feelings of impotence in the face of such overwhelming need, and for introducing all her readers to the work and spirit of the extraordinary Alison Thompson, who is, truly, the epitome of moral courage. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude when I'm in the presence of work that reminds me to honor what is both significant and intangible: gift, vision, rigor.....ethics, grace, effort. The top image is the brilliant work of Manon Gignoux, and below is "Epigram" by Paul Villinski (via Morgan Lehman Gallery). I began with such beauty to put a bit of a cushion between you, dear reader, and what is about to be a bit of a rant. And though blogs are supposed to be bastions of positivity and "keeping up appearances", I have to get this one off my chest. It's January, and in spite of our collective holiday hangovers, we are admonished to take part in the yearly ritual of the "SALE!" The phenomenon where the consumer and the retailer do the stand-off dance for the sake of acquisition and clearing out, respectively. And it's great when someone is able to purchase something they love that would otherwise be out of their financial reach. What I dislke about the whole thing (here comes the rant part), is that it perpetuates the idea that price should be our sole consideration. The American consumer is so obsessed with the idea of the "bargain", that the real cost of that bargain is mostly forgotten. (see this, this, and this...) Yes, as any friend of mine would confirm, one of the quickest ways to get me going is to utter the dreaded phrase "made in China" or something truly oxymoronic like "Rodarte for Target". What is sold as "accessibility" is actually faux populism for the sake of corporate profits. Consumer choices based on principles need to be applauded, not reviled as "elitist".

There. I feel so much better now. Thank you for your patience...

What, then, to celebrate? I'd certainly start with all the lovely people whose creations I love, both the names to the right and the many, many other designer/makers who engage in thoughtful, timeless work.

The unique. The skillful. Beauty that takes your breath away. (this installation by Emily Ann Nachison has been astounding me for days...) The poetry of a Japanese blog.

And tomorrow, maybe we should all be a little bit crazy and cause a scene.

Forward thinking...

Yes, I know I'm getting ahead of myself but, for me, 2009 was a year of absolute change---in work, in location, in worldview. Much of that was gratifying and enlivening, other realities were unsettling at best. And so, I'm eager to press onward to 2010. In which I've decided to embrace authenticity, transparency, and the full-throttle search for my own creatively engaged tribe. And, while "chelliswilson." is already operating on the concept of celebrating honorable provenance and the beautifully crafted object, I'm more committed than ever to use this venue to explore these ideas more fully through art and events. I thrive on ideas and exchanging ideas with other like-minded souls. On the surface of things, I suppose I would be categorized as the "shopkeeper". But as so many brilliantly creative endeavors have proven (Portland's own "Rogues Gallery" being a stellar example), a truly great brand is, at its core, an extension of the worldview of its creators. Besides, the title "cultural explorer" is much more fun....

What's been inspiring me...

I have a concept for a video piece about the "chelliswilson." that would feature a local fairytale beauty with an edge named K. (if you're reading this, you know who you are...) What kicked these thoughts into gear was this. A campaign that's truly moving. (Walt Whitman!) So fresh and strong. I'd love to hear from interested filmmakers...

These performances, coming in January to Whitney Art Works here in Portland. This is the sort of thing I absolutely love...

I had a vision of holiday magic free of cliche...festive but peaceful....and this is the result. The apple trees and roses are a bit of ancient symbology (and a nod to my mother's Anglican traditions), the gold and the crystal...purely for sparkle. Add to that the cocktail of scents---roses, a Diptyque Feu de Bois candle burning, gingerbread cookies---and I'd have to say we're in a holiday mood.

Ideas....new & revisited

On this post-Thanksgiving weekend, I've been thinking (amidst the "Black Friday" hype and the consumer spending predictions) about the fact that I'm one of "them". Retailers, that is. A group portrayed as woeful and desperate one day, and as marketing fiends trying to abscond with your wallet the next. And, while I like to think of "chelliswilson." as a place to exchange ideas, find like-minded people, and to surprise and delight with my "finds", I'm still in business, not only survive, but to profit. To this end, I feel especially grateful to all the people in the "inspired. in the shop." column to the right. Their work is not only beautiful, but honorable. No shilling required. Phew.

Maira Kalman & SANS redux: After finally seeing "Food, Inc." (twice) last week, I've been full of thoughts about what's necessary to reverse the damage done to our planet, our culture, our families, our souls by the consumerized and industrialized culture that's numbed and trivialized us for far too long. In her Thanksgiving blog post for the New York Times, Maira Kalman (I posted about her previously here) expressed perfectly everything I'd been feeling in a hopeful and charming way. I originally posted about the visionary work of Lika Volkova in August. When I saw the SANS Spring 2010 collection, I was just blown away by its originality and beauty.

Stunning.

This is the seminal holiday text of my childhood. Between this, and the other rousing family favorite, "Good King Sauerkraut looked out, On his feets un-e-ven...", it's incredible that I'm able to correctly spout the words of any Christmas carol. My father was a classics scholar and, therefore, singing the Anglicized "O Come All Ye Faithful" was strictly verboten. It was "Adeste Fideles" or nothing. So, here's to Richard B. who, if he were still here among the living, would be ninety-eight next Thursday. I raise my glass (preferably with a Gibson in it) to dear old Dad, with his bespoke suit, his old school tie, and his fedora. A "Mad Men" original. They just don't make 'em like that any more.

Oh, yes, and while you're at it, put this on the stereo, too.

These beautifully composed images all document the work of self-described "Eating Designer" Marije Vogelzang and "Proef" the conceptual food studio/restaurant in Amsterdam. A graduate of the Design Academy in Eindhoven, her work explores the social, personal, and cultural aspects of eating-- as much about art and ritual as it is about cuisine. I recently discovered Marije while following the incredible "Pop! Tech" conference (held recently in Camden, Maine) where she was a speaker. Her installation "Pasta Sauna" opens tomorrow at Performa in NY.

I always had the sneaking suspicion that I was in need of this, but I never realized there was an actual storefront! Yes, a tutorial on your own existence, edited into a mere five courses: LOVE, POLITICS, WORK, PLAY, FAMILY. The syllabi for these courses were invented by writers, artists, actors and academics. (the sanest people I know!)

But the enlightenment doesn't stop there!

The School of Life has an in-house travel agency---endorsed by Alain de Botton, no less!--to help send you off on an expansive holiday.

And to make sure your library is relevant: "blbliotherapists".

Practice the art of stimulating discourse at Conversation Dinners (and Breakfasts).

Even "Sermons" delivered by "maverick cultural figures" (remember: they're Brits. Probably the word "maverick" doesn't automatically make them think of you-know-who...) on topics like "Loving Your Ego", "Envy", "Seduction", "Risk" and, last but not least, "Good Design".

Attend an Event! How about "How to be Cool" or "How to Eat". Or the one that should be mandatory, "How to be a Better Lover". (Hmmm...wonder what kind of party favors they give out at that one...?)

You inspire me....

I want to share with you four projects. Each brings beauty, sheds light, and creates community in honorable and innovative ways. All these people are using their significant talents to foster good. Two originate close to home, the others from further away. All are superbly executed and creatively engaging. Initiatives we can all be proud to support.

From textile artist and environmental strategist Sasha Duerr, the Permacouture Institute, an educational non-profit for "regenerative design in fashion and textiles", promoting "healthy integration between nature and culture". One of Sasha's best ideas is an event she calls (with tongue firmly planted in cheek...) "Dinner to Dye For", an enlightening and fun marriage of the Slow Textiles and Slow Food movements. I think this is something that could be beautifully replicated here in Portland.

Anyone one who's been reading this blog knows by now that John Bielenberg (of Belfast, Maine!) is one of my heroes. His "Project M" is an immersion program that inspires young designers to use their skills and talents to positively impact the culture, one community at a time. PieLab, based in Greensboro, Alabama (home to Sam Mockbee's Rural Studio), is a pop-up experimental pie shop which hopes to foster conversation between neighbors in this rural, southern town "by uncovering the ideas, stories, aspirations, and talents of this underserved community." They are moving to a new space on the Main Street, and are asking for investment in this worthwhile endeavor.

From Portland, Maine based writer/photographers Peter Smith and Natalie Conn a documentary project called "The Sunday Best", an homage to "ordinary people doing extraordinary things". Each Sunday (hence the name), they feature a member of this community through narrative and portraiture. Think multimedia Studs Terkel. An integral part of this project is to find out if the public will support it. Please do.

Lastly, I want to honor my dear friend, artist Sara Lemieux, for her commitment and devotion to "The Barrio Planta Project" in Managua, Nicaragua. She's teaching art, dance, and English to children in this impoverished region, volunteering her time and myriad talents during the month of October.

Green Acres is the place to be....

...farm living is the life for me?? If the above isn't the perfect embodiment of an oxymoron, nothing is. Or perhaps Lagerfeld is as enamored of Li Edelkoort as I am. When you consider her projects in recent years---"A World of Folk" which suggests a tendency towards a more "unplugged" way of life, highlighting that "many of us want a more "acoustic" lifestyle and believe in a better future with organic food, rainwater, solar energy, biofuel, manually made tools, folk music and modern rural design."; and the Designhuis (an Edelkoort initiative) exhibit "Farm" by Studio Job, which beautifully elevates the iconography of rural living--- it's not as shocking to think of Chanel going off in this direction (albeit in a tongue-in-cheek way). I guess we know who's been reading The General Trend Book....

A slice of our new additions and favorite things. From Fog Linen Work, adorable tunics and contrasting (or matching) scarves, all in sublime Lithuanian linen. Chic tote in black linen and leather, also from Fog. Propped in my antique pony skin director's chair is "3191:Evenings", a new photographic collaboration by Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes. This is the companion to their 2008 book from Princeton Architectural Press, "A Year of Mornings: 3191 Miles Apart". (for those of you who aren't familiar, 3191 is the number of miles between Portland, Maine and Portland, Oregon.) We have signed copies! And just visible in the photo....

...gorgeous RODIN olio lusso for face and body. Beautiful, glowy skin, an intoxicating scent, elegant packaging---perfect, streamlined luxury. The golden box in the foreground is one of the most impressive press packages I've seen. Samples sit on an antique French "Theatre Guignol" plate. One way to tell just how honored I am to be carrying RODIN olio lusso, is that it's displayed on my pride-and-joy: the table handmade by my great-grandfather from five different hardwoods.

Art, sex, and "unabashedly prep"...

While I may be eschewing trade shows (at least for the time being), I suddenly have the urge to go to New York...now that the fashion circus has taken down its tents....and head straight to the Gagosian Gallery. Until October 31st, on view are the dual exhibitions of my dreams: Sally Mann: Proud Flesh and Cy Twombly: Eight Sculptures. I'm not sure how this one escaped my radar, but when I discovered this bit of news this afternoon, I nearly swooned. Now all I need is a suitable companion to accompany me to this slice of art world Nirvana....

On an equally lustful note....

While I found most of the collections for Spring 2010 lacking, the exception may be Dolce & Gabbana RTW: an intoxicating masculine/feminine dichotomy...all mannish suits and extreme corsetry. I think the quote in WWD article sums it up nicely: "Romance is lovely, but romance with great sex is even better---who's to argue?" My sentiments exactly.

If you can't wait until Spring for your dose of pheromones, go take a peek at Dries Van Noten Fall Winter '09/10. It's perfection and seduction (the leather dress! the silk trench!) Oh, baby. Haven't had enough sexy fashion? Purple Diary (the official blog of Purple Fashion) will help satisfy your needs....

For something wonderfully "Top Drawer" (as opposed to "Underwear Drawer"), I found the most delightful blog. Whether it's ironic or just terribly earnest I can't tell; but, in honor of my blue-blooded Dad, the Harvard Man, and my best friend, the quintessential New Englander--Miss Kate of Nantucket: I give you "Unabashedly Prep". I've always loved creating with yarn and needles, but have never been enamored of knitting's dowdy image. This genius stroke of branding has helped revamp our ideas about who knits. These pictures make knitting not only cool, but sexy, too. Thank you, Terry Richardson.

Thanks to John Bielenberg (the force behind Project M, which I've mentioned before), I discovered this incredible festival---Pioneers of Change. Part of NY400, this brilliant event was brought to fruition by Renny Ramakers, co-founder and director of Droog Design. Full of thought-provoking content, presented in an arresting and elegant way, I guarantee that there's plenty of visual and intellectual material here to keep you riveted for hours. I couldn't possibly due justice to the festival's scope in one blog post, but I wanted to give you a taste of my favorite highlights. Each "house" is one of eleven former commanding officers' houses on Governor's Island transformed by Dutch designers.

House 8A: A reaction against society's obsession with speed. "Go Slow"

House 7A: Urban Farming....making agriculture attractive..,.

And my absolute favorite....House 17 featuring the work of the Dutch fashion collective "Painted". I read their mission and I was immediately smitten.

"Painted, led by Saskia van Drimmelen, Margreet Sweerts and Desiree Hammen, shows off schedule collections created by themselves and invited designers in league with Bulgarian artisans, all working on each garment sequentially. With a conviction that newness doesn't necessarily equal advancement, the collective embraces the handmade as opposed to the mass produced, creating personalized slow garments growing out of many hands in fellowship. Painted Series marries nearly forgotten techniques with sharply stylized couture in unique pieces, inventively preserving bygone skills."

Oh! How I'd love to have these amazing garments in the shop!

As summer goes...

....and all of us get back to business in earnest, I've been thinking a good deal about how I want "chelliswilson." to evolve as we go forward. I have so many plans---challenging me to be more creative, innovative, and energetic than ever (not to mention pushing the limits of what is traditionally considered the purview of a retail venture). I'm hopeful that I have enough inner "Pied Piper" to convince Portland (and all our friends out in the world) to come along for the ride. I found inspiration this week via the British publication "Monocle" which describes itself as "a global briefing covering international affairs, business, culture, and design." It's been added to my already unwieldy list of "must read" periodicals. For the sake of brevity, I'll just call the following "How to do Retail Right". This and this...such examples to follow!

But before we leave our summer vacations behind, I want to mention one more Maine destination that is particularly dear to my heart: the Leighton Gallery in (where else?) Blue Hill. For twenty-nine years, Judith Leighton has been celebrating artists in her beautifully renovated barn with its perfect sculpture garden. Enchanting and magical and not to be missed. I took this photo in May 2008. It had been raining (she provides guests with umbrellas!). So peaceful.

More Maurer.....

This is the most extraordinary installation: "Lacrime del Pescatore" by Ingo Maurer. Presented at Spazio Krizia in April, "Tears of the Fisherman" (in English) is three nets, embedded with Swarovski crystals, suspended across a room. A dimmable light source is attached to a wall separately, and the entire piece is attached to a pendulum so it moves in a rhythmic way....it breathes. Just breathtaking.

He manages to be both profound and playful, respectively. See photos of "Egg Installation" and "Oh Man, It's a Ray!" here. "The Poet of Light".....to be sure.

Also wry. And political. No one but Maurer would come up with this to protest new European guidelines banning incandescent lightbulbs. Sigh. He may just be the perfect man...

A day for lovely women....

I have had the most delightful and affirming day. And I have some wonderful women to thank. My day began with an email from Masami (whose lovely creations under the label "Cocon" have just arrived in the shop!), directing me to her blog. She had written such a warm and generous post about chelliswilson. (and about my darling Lisa of Le Bouton!)----I was so touched.

My second encounter should be preceeded by an announcement: ** Please come by tomorrow evening for our First Friday festivities! On view will be floral images (think of it as our "please don't let summer end!" show..)--- encaustics by photographer Shoshannah White and paintings by
Sara Lemieux. We'll be having Prosecco (which pretty much serves as the "house" libation) and orange cardamom madeleines, so bring your lust for beauty and your sweet tooth and come "wet your whistle"!! (as my father used to say...)** On to my second encounter....

I met Shoshannah for the first time this afternoon. She's warm and engaging and we chatted up a storm about people and interests in common. Not to mention her huge talent.

Later in the afternoon, Maria Vettese brought me copies of books from the "Lines & Shapes" series which, I'm excited to say, are now sold at chelliswilson. Maria should be known as "The Woman of Myriad Abilities"---an artist in the mediums of art direction, styling, photography, writing and letterpress printing! She co-curates "Lines & Shapes" (a book collective) and is half the talented duo (along with Stephanie Congdon Barnes) of "3191 Miles Apart" which consists of a website and two books: the first, "A Year of Mornings" published in 2008 by Princeton Architectural Press, and the second, "3191: Evenings" published by Other Books this October (also available here in the shop!). I've been a "fan" of Maria's for years and I am happy to report that she's thoroughly captivating and delicately elegant. And I embrace the opportunity to know her better!

I must also give a "Thank you" to Imke. That photograph....it's transcendent....I have no words.

Such an amazing group of women....you all inspire me.

Wiscasset practicum....

Yesterday I waxed poetic about my magical encounter; and while I can't guarantee transporting swan sightings every time, here are some Wiscasset spots that are dependably delightful.

This is "Rock, Paper, Scissors" a shop devoted almost entirely to all things paper, owned and beautifully curated by the talented Erica Soule. In fact, her knowledge and interests are so varied that she has a second shop (completely different but equally wonderful) down the street called "Smitten".

Go here to marvel at the selection of antique French textiles (and rent an apartment in France from them while you're there!)

Now take your appetite to "Treats" for a vegetable terrine, an elegant sandwich, a giant cookie, or a special bottle of wine.

....I was reminded of why I live in Maine. About an hour north of Portland is Wiscasset, a town that refers to itself as "the prettiest village in Maine". Saccharine though that sounds, it really does live up to the moniker. And while I have several favorite spots I could recommend, the day's magic turned out to be non-commercial and truly serendipitous. While driving slowly through the neighborhoods, marvelling at the nineteenth century manses (and even a replica of a villa!), I found on a quiet side street, a house that must surely belong to New England's answer to Miss Havisham. Decaying grandeur at its best---overgrown bushes, wild flowers everywhere, sagging draperies, aging paint---and just beyond the house, this is what I saw.

Miss Havisham has a swan. Wiscasset is not only pretty, it's enchanted.

I love this beautiful coat from Fog Linen Work. The linen has the most incredible hand, and it cinches the waist and ties in the back---so chic. I also love how it looks with my 1920's pony skin director's chair!

On the other side, another beautiful Fog piece and the most adorable children's early Fall outfit by Le Bouton. Crisp linen shorts and a luxurious cashmere/merino pullover---that's the way to keep your stylish little person cozy! Walks on the beach in Maine can be chilly! Having pieces for children in the shop just makes everything seem friendlier.

I love this clip from the extraordinary French documentary "Etre et Avoir". If you've not seen this film, you should. The story of a gifted teacher and the students he nutures with respect and infinite patience. Truly moving.

And this gorgeous shop in Paris whose profits are devoted to operating a cooperative for young women in Madagascar.
